CSTD side event: Inclusive data governance for women’s empowerment – Perspectives from Africa and the EU
The twenty-ninth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), taking place from 20–24 April 2026 in Geneva, will address the role of science, technology and innovation (STI) in the age of artificial intelligence, while also advancing discussions on data governance at all levels.
Despite growing recognition of data as a strategic resource, persistent gender data gaps, unequal access to digital technologies, and structural biases in data ecosystems continue to limit women’s participation in and benefits from the digital economy. Inclusive data governance is therefore critical to ensuring that data systems empower women and girls, particularly in developing countries.
This side event, co-organized by The Gambia and Austria, aims to contribute to the discussion within the Working Group on Data Governance at All Levels by highlighting how inclusive data governance frameworks can advance women’s empowerment while reflecting diverse national priorities and development contexts.
Participation is open to everyone attending the CSTD.
